daddacool: Chicken pox, holidays and travel insurance- sponsored ...

Fifi came out in a non specific general viral rash earlier this week. We had a momentary panic that it was her second visitation of chicken pox; she had it originally when she was one and a half and I do know that you can get it again when you're that little. Fortunately the spots pretty much went down over night and we breathed again- we've got Danger's christening in a little over a week and that's pretty much the incubation period for the pox had Fifi been contagious.

Still, it reminded me of the instance when the Boy and Fifi both contracted chicken pox the first time. It was the last hot summer we had, 2010, at the temperature was soaring in the 30's. That's?Celsius? not?Fahrenheit by the way? We were on holiday in Norfolk with the?in-laws?having a great time when all of a sudden both kids were covered head to foot in spots.

Norfolk being Norfolk, there are plenty of remote places we could have gone and kept out of peoples way but unfortunately neither of the?in-laws?had contracted the pox up to that point, and chicken pox isn't very pleasant in adults. So we packed up and headed home of the third day of the last hot summer holiday we had and spent the rest of the week sulking about in the back garden.

There was one silver lining though, and that was the travel insurance we had for the holiday. The company we hired the cottage through demanded we took out insurance before the would confirm the booking and boy are we glad we did. We may have moaned about the cost initially but when it came to making a claim, we got the vast majority of the cost of our holiday back.?

It's funny, we'd never go abroad without all sorts of insurance but up until this point we'd never taken out insurance for a holiday in this country. That's something that's changed now, and we don't book any sort of holiday without the right sort of travel insurance. You can't be too careful, and if the worst happens, at least you get some cash back at the end of it.

Final action on whistle-blower bill

(AP) ? The Senate on Tuesday gave final congressional approval for a bill that would significantly expand protections for federal employees who expose fraud, waste and abuse and make it easier to punish supervisors who try to retaliate against the whistle-blowers.

The whistle-blower protection measure, approved by voice vote and sent to the president, was the product of 13 years of work by organizations pushing for greater protections for the federal workforce.

The legislation closes loopholes created by court rulings, which removed protections for whistle-blowers. One loophole specified that whistle-blowers were only protected when they were the first to report misconduct.

The new legislation, however, would go beyond restoring protections, to expand whistle-blower rights and clarify protections that were not explicitly clear. For instance, the bill would clarify that whistle-blowers could challenge the consequences of government policy decisions.

Specific protections would be given to certain employees, including government scientists who challenge censorship and workers at the Transportation Security Administration, who provide screening at airports.

The bill also would clarify a 24-year-old portion of appropriations bills, to make clear that agency restrictions on disclosures are superseded by the right to communicate with Congress and other whistle-blower rights.

To stop illegal retaliation, the bill would make it easier to discipline those responsible, by modifying the burden of proof required when taking action against those trying to punish whistle-blowers. Also, the Office of Special Counsel, which was established to protect federal employees, would no longer be liable for attorney fees of government managers if the office does not prevail in a disciplinary action.

The new legislation would suspend the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals' sole jurisdiction to review decisions in whistle-blower cases.

The bill's supporters said the court consistently narrowed protections and ruled for whistle-blowers only three times in 229 cases between October 1994 and May 2012. A review by all federal circuit courts was added as a two-year experiment.

The legal director of the Government Accountability Project, Tom Devine, said: "After a 13-year roller coaster campaign, Congress unanimously has given whistle-blowers who defend the public a fighting chance to defend themselves. This is a major victory for taxpayers and public servants, but a major defeat for special interests and bureaucrats. Free speech rights for government employees never have been stronger."

But Devine said that House Republicans blocked proposed provisions for jury trials to enforce newly-enacted protections, and extension of free speech rights to national security workers making disclosures within their agencies.

Carolyn Lerner, head of the federal Office of Special Counsel, which investigates retaliation against government whistle-blowers, also praised the legislation.

She said her office "stands ready to implement these long-overdue reforms, which will better ensure that no employee is retaliated against for speaking out against government waste or misconduct."

Israel considers resumption of Gaza assassinations

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel is considering resuming its contentious practice of assassinating militant leaders in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip in an effort to halt intensified rocket attacks on Israel's south, according to defense officials.

That Israel might renew a practice that brought it harsh international censure is evidence of the tight spot Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in. With Israeli elections two months away, rocket barrages from Gaza are disrupting the lives of 1 million residents of southern Israel, pressuring the government to come up with an effective response.

In the latest flare-up, Gaza militants have fired more than 100 rockets at Israel in recent days, triggering retaliatory Israeli airstrikes that have killed six people in Gaza.

Some Israelis are demanding a harsh military move, perhaps a repeat of Israel's bruising incursion into Gaza four years ago. Others believe Israel should target Hamas leaders, a method it used to kill dozens of militants nearly a decade ago.

Advocates say targeted killings are an effective deterrent without the complications associated with a ground operation, chiefly civilian and Israeli troop casualties. Proponents argue they also prevent future attacks by removing their masterminds.

Critics say they invite retaliation by militants and encourage them to try to assassinate Israeli leaders.

Defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential discussions, said the assassination of Hamas leaders is shaping up as the preferred response to the stepped-up rocket fire.

They have the backing of two former military chiefs with experience in the matter.

Opposition lawmaker Shaul Mofaz served as military chief of staff and defense minister when Israel carried out a wave of assassinations against Hamas and other militant leaders in the early part of the past decade. He and other former senior defense officials contend these assassinations left the Hamas leadership in disarray and put a halt to the rash of Hamas suicide bombings that killed hundreds of Israelis.

"I'm in favor of targeted killings," Mofaz told Army Radio on Monday. "It is a policy that led Hamas to understand, during the suicide bombings, that they would pay the price should (the bombings) continue."

Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, the chief of staff at the time targeted killings surged, is convinced the practice worked.

"Clearly over these past 13 years there has been an ongoing war, but there have also been extended periods of calm," Yaalon told Army Radio on Monday. "When I was chief of staff, the targeted killings against Hamas led to extended periods of quiet."

Hamas dismissed the threat of targeted killings as "psychological warfare," and its political leaders were not in hiding. The group's military commanders tend to keep a low profile anyway, for fear of Israeli assassination attempts.

"This is psychological warfare designed to terrorize our people," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said of the assassination talk. "Hamas will not bow to Israeli threats and people in Gaza will continue to live their ordinary lives not fearing such threats."

Under Yaalon and Mofaz, Israeli aircraft struck at the commander of Hamas' military wing, Salah Shehadeh, the movement's spiritual leader, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, his successor, Abdel Aziz Rantisi, and dozens of other senior Hamas military commanders.

Militants retaliated for some of the targeted attacks but eventually replaced the suicide bombings with years of rocket fire that still sends Israeli civilians running for shelters.

Backlash from rights groups and governments was harsh, especially after Shehadeh was killed in a bombing along with 14 other people, most of them children.

The policy of targeted killings, said Israeli opposition lawmaker Zehava Galon, "didn't prove itself. We killed, and there were more attacks."

What Israel should do is reach a long-term truce agreement with Hamas with the help of the Egyptians, said Galon, of the dovish Meretz party.

Israel quelled much of the rocket fire with its devastating, three-week war in Gaza in early 2009, but Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza have been stocking their arsenals with more and better weapons. In recent months, they've been emboldened to escalate their barrages. Since Saturday, more than 110 rockets and mortars have struck southern Israel, according to the military's count.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday told foreign ambassadors during a visit to Ashkelon, a southern city that has been battered by Gaza rockets, that Israel would defend itself.

"I don't know of any of your governments who could accept such a thing. I don't know of any of the citizens of your cities, who could find that acceptable and something that could proceed on a normal basis. I think the whole world understands that this is not acceptable," Netanyahu said.

"We'll take whatever action is necessary to put a stop to this. This is not merely our right, it's also our duty," he said.

The latest Israeli airstrikes have killed six Palestinians, including four civilians, but the rocket attacks persist. Mediation efforts by the United Nations and Egypt have been unsuccessful so far.

Gaza militants are also talking tough.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said Monday that "the Palestinian people and the resistance factions will not stand idly by but will defend themselves by all possible means."

Abu Ahmed, the spokesman for the Islamic Jihad group's military wing, questioned Israel's ability to conduct a broad offensive. "They recognize the magnitude of the resistance power in Gaza and the changed regional situation," he said.

Some defense officials believe Hamas will not be so easily subdued as before. Militants who once relied on crude rockets they manufactured themselves can draw now on sophisticated rockets and missiles smuggled in from Iran, Libya and other Mideast countries.

Lawmaker Amir Peretz, a former Israeli defense minister, concludes that if Israel launched another incursion into Gaza, it would have to stay there for at least six months and take control of civilian installations and lives of the coastal strip's 1.6 million people.

Israel, which governed Gaza from 1967 until it withdrew 8,500 settlers and its soldiers in 2005, has other options before it reaches that point, Peretz said.

"Targeted killings are definitely an effective policy," Peretz said, adding that he supports the targeted killings of military leaders like Hamas military wing commander Ahmed Jabari, but killing political leaders like Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh may not be in Israel's interest.

"They'll find a replacement for Haniyeh very fast," he said. "But a replacement for Jabari is very hard to find," he told Army Radio.

Email Marketing Tricks to Get Your Business Through the Slow ...

While it is essential for all companies to market their products, not every company utilizes email marketing as a method for boosting sales. Which is a shame ? with today?s technology, email marketing can be an increasingly smart and cost-effective way to boost your business. ?Social media may have taken over some of the revenue created from an email marketing campaign, but that doesn?t mean you can?t still utilize this more ?personal? form of communication with your clients.

Here are a few tips for creating an effective email marketing campaign:

Make sure your title is effective. The subject will be the first thing seen, so make sure yours is striking, unforgettable and inviting. Make it something YOU would want to open if it wound up in your own personal inbox. Do this, and you are halfway home, and will have lots of eyes on your message.

Including a freebie is a great way to follow up with a client through email. Make the offer compelling with an enticing massage that stands out in your email. You can also use the end of the email as a way to notify them of the free items.

Ask for at least a customer?s first name at the time that they opt-in to your list. This way, you can customize each recipient?s email so that it addresses them individually, making your message seem more personal. The emails that you send to them will stand out because recipients won?t feel quite so anonymous. That being said, don?t make it look like it?s just an ?auto-fill? type scenario. Make sure the opening line is conducive to a personal greeting.

Create your email list from people who have requested to receive it. Buying or renting mailing lists is a poor choice for email marketing. Use business cards given to you at networking functions and industry events to boost your list, but make sure that people opt-in to be added, or you could face legal trouble. You should also provide a place to sign-up on your store or website. This will guarantee your list remains relevant and it will promote business growth.

On that same note, make sure you create an easy way to opt OUT of the email list. Sure, this seems counter productive, but companies that deliberately hide the ?opt-out? link are actually doing more harm than good. You want your list to be people who WANT to receive it, not disgruntled customers who get frustrated every time an email comes through.

Get an object lesson in how not to run an email campaign by deliberately burying yourself in spam. Make an email account, display it around the Internet, and look at the spam come in. See what?s wrong with these emails and make sure you don?t make the same mistakes. Taking steps to set you apart from spammers will give your brand a boost in credibility.

Try including a coupon with a follow-up email after meeting a new client. Make sure you include a link that directs them to this coupon. Give your customer an example or two of the potential savings offered with the coupons.

Keep your messages short and to the point. Customers won?t want to read any more than a few paragraphs. Your readers don?t have the time or the attention span for overly long messages. So when writing your email, make it short and to the point. This way, you will be sure to capture their interest and have them returning to read more in the future.

Bottom line: stand out from the rest of the email-verse. You want people to look forward to your emails. And don?t inundate them with emails every day unless they specifically ask for that. A message once a week at the most, and once every couple of months at the least, should suffice as a summary of what?s going on with your business.

Happy emailing!

Fashion PULIS: Yomenya Goemon opens in Greenbelt 3

Yomenya Goemon, which literally means Western Noodle Restaurant, first opened along Koen Street in Shibuya Prefecture, Japan in 1976. Its logo sports the face of a famous lawbreaker with a heart of gold. ?Ishikawa Goemon is a legendary historical Japanese outlaw hero who stole from the rich to give to the poor: kind of like a Japanese version of Robin Hood,? explained Richmond Yang, Managing Director for Yomenya Goemon.

The brand famously hijacks the Japanese staple of noodles by marrying it with Western-style pasta, using premium ingredients from Italy (durum wheat semolina spaghetti noodles and extra virgin olive oil) and Japan (onsen egg, nori, mentaiko, Ao-Shiso, and Karashi Takana).

?The menu is special as Yomenya Goemon is able to seamlessly integrate Japanese and Western ingredients in a harmony of flavors that is recognizably Western but distinctly and undeniably Japanese,? said Richmond Yang.

?The result is a perfect fusion of East and West, with Japanese Spaghetti Noodles meant to be eaten and enjoyed the traditional Japanese way, which is slurping them with chopsticks,? Yang said.

The ?Japanese spaghetti house? has become such a favorite among the ramen-loving Japanese that it is now the second largest food and beverage player in Japan.

Under the Nippon Restaurant Systems Group, Yomenya Goemon currently has over 300 restaurants and more than 2,500 stores covering 40 brands, in Japan alone. Other locations include Singapore, Shanghai and now the Philippines. Plans of expansion are also underway in Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan.

Filipinos familiar with Yomenya Goemon abroad needn?t worry, however, as all ingredients are either imported directly from Japan, or sourced locally through distributors of imported items.

Local franchise owners Richmond S. Yang, Luigi Vera and Robert Epes adhere to the strictest standards in the kitchen, that even the equipment is exactly the same as those utilized by the Yomenya Goemon outlets in Japan and Singapore.

?Our Sauces are prepared in our central kitchen using recipes approved by our Japanese principals following the same recipes in Japan and Singapore,? said Luigi Vera.

The kitchen staff initially conducted training in Singapore, with follow-up training classes on food and service standards conducted under the auspices of Japanese and Singaporean Chef Trainers in Manila.

?Food preparation is meticulously Japanese in cooking style as all the Japanese Spaghetti and Japanese Pizza dishes are cooked fresh upon order, to deliver you the best product possible,? said Luigi.

Customers may choose from the Grand Menu, 90% of which is composed of items served in all countries, and the rest originals based on ?popular local flavors? as concocted by the research and development team

This means that Filipinos may not only sample 30 unique Japanese Spaghetti variants and seven Japanese Pizza variants, but also original dishes particularly tailored to the Filipino taste.

?For most of Japanese Spaghetti & Pizza dishes, they are available in the Philippine market bearing the exact same taste profile as the same dishes in Japan and Singapore because we feel the Filipino?s palate is already at the level of sophistication to fully appreciate their unique and distinct flavors,? said Robert Epes.

?The Philippine Flavors line-up of Japanese Spaghetti & Pizza dishes, however, are uniquely Filipino as they were developed exclusively for the Philippine market using indigenous ingredients such as our ubiquitous aligue or crab fat paste and longganisa breakfast staple,? Luigi added.

The menu helpfully marks with a Philippine flag the dishes exclusive to the local market, such as the Pork Longganisa & Broccoli Spaghetti (P285); Crab, Shrimp, and Scallop with Crab Paste Spaghetti (P325); and Longganisa Pizza (P395).

All-time favorite dishes, which stand out because their taste profiles represent a Japanese take on a classic spaghetti favorite, are tagged by the Goemon head logo.

These include the Squid Ink Spaghetti (P240); Carbonara with Yolk and Bacon (P260); Hokkaido Cheese Cream Soup Spaghetti with Scallop, Corn, Bacon and Potato (P295); Carbonara Meat Sauce with Onsen Egg (P325, in beef or pork meat sauce variants); Smoked Chicken and Three Cheese (P350); Avocado, Bacon and Shrimp with Cheese Cream Sauce (P375); Mentaiko, Shrimp & Japanese Herb Ao Shiso (P395); and Porcini Pizza with Bacon and Three Mushrooms (P450)

Japanese Spaghetti dishes? serving sizes are either regular (120 grams) or large (160 grams), both generously portioned but meant ideally for individual servings. Diners may upsize to large portion (P120), and order add-ons of soup (P20) and wafu salad (P100).

The Japanese pizzas, meanwhile, come in a single size: 10 inches with eight slices good for three to four persons.

In addition, Yomenya Goemon also provides Regular, Large and Dessert Set Menus, where one can enjoy considerable savings compared to ordering ? la carte, as well as three different Half & Half Sets (P450-P550), each with two half-portion fixed Japanese Spaghetti variants with a soup and a single-serve drink.

A kid?s set menu is also inclusive of Neapolitan spaghetti (50 grams), chocolate cake, and orange juice.

The dessert menu provides options such as Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ice Cream (P160), Souffl? Cheese Cake (P160), and Mango Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream (P160).

There is also a range of hot and cold beverages, including Iced Royal Milk Tea (P80; with ice cream, P100), and a choice between bottomless Red Iced Tea (P85) and bottomless Lemon Iced Tea (P85).

Yomenya Goemon is located at the 2nd level, Greenbelt 3, Ayala Center, Makati City. It is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday till Thursday, and from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For reservations, call 729-0586.

For additional news, Yomenya Goemon Philippines provides updates on Facebook (www.facebook.com/YomenyaGoemonPhilippines) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/YomenyaGoemonph)

Former instructors write unexpected family history | Hesston College

It is not uncommon for people to discover new relatives at Hesston College. With ties to the Mennonite faith tradition and many of the students, faculty and staff coming from the same faith background, the branches of many family trees run all across campus.

Sharon Cranford, however, did not expect to find any cousins at Hesston College. As an African-American Baptist woman teaching at a college from a predominately white, European church tradition, common blood lines were the last thing she expected to find. But the discovery of just that led her to co-author a book, ?Kinship Concealed: Amish Mennonites/African-American Connections? with her new-found cousin, Mennonite-Episcopalian Dwight Roth.
?
The book is historical fiction ? documenting the historical multi-racial lineage of Amish brothers Jacob and John Mast who immigrated from Switzerland to Philadelphia, Pa., in 1750 with a fictional story line.
?
Jacob was the first Amish bishop to be ordained in the United States and had an expansive group of descendants in the Conestoga Valley of eastern Pennsylvania. His brother John left the Amish church and moved south during the time when slavery in America was at its peak. His descendants became Methodists and Baptists and include slave owners and slaves.
?
?Discovering this family connection and writing the book has expanded my view of family,? said Roth. ?For many people, kinship systems, ancestry and the definition of family may be much broader than we realize.?
?
Cranford and Roth were both teaching in the social science department at Hesston College in 2004 when they uncovered the connection that went further than common academic pursuits.
?
Overhearing a conversation Cranford was having with another colleague and mentioning her great grandmother?s maiden name of Mast, Roth interjected that his mother was also a Mast. He went on to explain that Mast is a common Amish Mennonite name and his own grandfather was an Amish Mennonite bishop.
?
Roth, who taught at Hesston from 1973 to 2010, had an interest in his family?s genealogy and asked a few questions of Cranford to see if they might stem from the same Mast branch. When Cranford answered Roth?s questions correctly, the two made their way to the college library to further explore their unexpected discovery in the C.Z. Mast Geneaology book, which covered the family history from 1750 to 1909. There, their suspicions were confirmed when they found both family lines.

?From the moment I first came to Hesston, I felt comfortable,? said Cranford, who taught at Hesston from 2002 to 2007. ?I was raised with many of the principles and values of this culture, but would have never made the connection. It was wonderful to find out there was a kinship and reason I felt so comfortable. I believe our discovery was meant to be and this story was meant to be told.?
?
It was several years after their discovery that Cranford and Roth decided their family?s story needed to be told. Both set out on research trips to the areas where their families originated ? Pennsylvania for the northern Amish Masts and east Texas and North Carolina for the southern Masts ? to talk with relatives still living in the area and visit cemeteries and other historical family sites.
?
The Mast family became multi-racial when John?s grandson Reuben, a slave owner in North Carolina, fathered a child with a slave girl. The child was Cranford?s great great grandfather, Charley Mast, who was ripped away from his mother as a baby and sold to his uncle, Reuben?s brother John.
?
Throughout the book, Cranford and Roth use imaginative history to look into what their ancestors? lives may have been like ? their struggles, pain, fears and celebrations.
?
?I have felt my great great great grandmother?s presence ? Charley?s mother ? as I have gone through this whole process,? said Cranford. ?As a slave, not much is known about her, but as a mother myself, I can empathize with what it must have been like to have her child torn away. Writing about it has calmed my spirit. Our ancestors propel us. Because of that compelling spirit, they drive what I say and feel.?
?
For both authors, writing their ancestors? stories have been a personal experience full of growth and understanding.
?
?This has been a profoundly spiritual and emotional experience for me, which is why I think it is about something larger than Sharon and I meeting,? said Roth. ?Our ancestors wanted this story to be told.?
?
Aside from telling an interesting and unexpected story, Cranford and Roth hope their book will encourage others to be open minded to the realities of bloodlines that may exist even in their own families, but in an even broader sense, to realize how connections across races exist.
?
?I hope our readers will recognize the strange American phenomenon about color and how tied up we are in that,? said Cranford. ?I hope they will take a more internal look at ?self? and who we all are as a people.?
?
?Stories like this have happened throughout history and continue to occur, but people don?t want to talk about it,? said Roth. ?The complexity of kinship is often the elephant in the room, but we have decided we are going to talk about it.?
?
?Kinship Concealed? is currently being reviewed by publishers and Cranford and Roth hope that their family?s story will be available to all readers soon.
red their common ancestry when both were teaching at Hesston College in 2004.

Arduino Micro shrinks your favorite DIY platform down to ridiculous proportions

Arduino Micro shrinks your favorite DIY platform down to ridiculous proportions

With the Arduino Leonardo, everyone's favorite hackable microcontroller turned a new page. Now it's time to bring that simplified design and slightly expanded feature set to the rest of the family, including the itty-bitty Arduino Micro. The tiny, embed-friendly board was designed with help from Adafruit Industries, one of the biggest players in the DIY market. At the heart of the Micro is the same 16MHz ATmega32u4 chip that powers the Leonardo, which means all the necessary USB controls are baked into the processor. Obviously, the layout here is different, so you wont be mounting the Micro to any shields, but with 20 digital I/O pins, 12 analog input channels and seven PWM channels, there's plenty of room for wiring up your own expansions. Amazingly it crams all that capability in a package just 48mm long and 18mm wide. The Arduino Micro will be available exclusively through Radio Shack and Adafruit first before becoming more widely available next month.
