HTC developing a new SoC with ST-Ericsson

Android Central

HTC continues to branch out.  After being a Qualcomm-centric handset maker they decided to source SoC's from more than one source, deciding to go with nVidia's Tegra 3 for the international version of the One X.  Well it looks like HTC is looking to take the next logical step and create an SoC of their own.  Only this isn't for their flagship phones.  It's for the mid and low-end devices, which is a market HTC has dabbled in, but not really competed with the likes of LG, Huawei, and to a lesser extent, Samsung.

HTC is making moves to become more and more like Samsung and Apple, both of which produce their own SoC's.  In the long run this could give HTC an advantage over other handset makers by giving them more control over hardware and cost.

Samsung's new Galaxy Phone gets official teaser (video)

Samsung's new Galaxy Phone gets official teaser (video)

The countdown is over and Samsung's not offering much to whet our appetite. A medley of opaque angles of galactic travel are meant to represent next week's big news story, alongside some brief claims of technology that fits easily in your hand. It finishes all too soon on those glossy enamel puddles shown above. The second trailer reveals more of the same, with Samsung promising the device will become "a natural side of life", throwing in a quick jibe at those rival smartphone-carrying "sheep". While we reckon we broadly know what to expect when it comes to internal hardware, we're still itching see how Samsung's looking to reinvigorate its phone design following HTC's stylish smartphone salvo. Well, at least it's just over a week left to wait.

Enterprise Open Source Usage Is Up, But Challenges Remain

sonatype-oss-policyI think we can all safely agree that open source software development is here to stay. Open, collaborative development has fundamentally changed not only how we code, but also the code we produce. It's easier than ever to build complex solutions by reusing existing components. A new report from Sonatype examines the current state of open source in the enterprise. Although heavily slanted toward open source Java consumption, the trends are interesting. It's also worth pointing out that Sonatype provides a solution for open source software management, so they have a stake in the game here. Their data is worth a look, though. Nearly 80% of the enterprises surveyed consume open source software. Most interest to me: two thirds of the companies surveyed are actively contributing code back to the upstream projects they consume. Also interesting to note is that just shy of half of all surveyed companies have a formal open source policy in place. And of those with formal policies, half of the respondents cite those policies as detrimental to the success of development.

Cockfight shooting believed to be sloppy hit

McALLEN, Texas (AP) ? Authorities believe the wild shooting that left three dead and eight wounded at a cockfight near the Mexican border was a sloppy hit on two brothers.

Three people were charged with cockfighting and engaging in organized criminal activity Friday just before officials identified the victims, who all had criminal pasts. The brothers believed to be the target of the shooting were among those killed. The gunmen remained at large.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino described a chaotic scene when gunfire broke out at the rural cockfighting ring near Edcouch, about 15 miles northeast of McAllen just after midnight Thursday.

As many as 200 attendees trampled each other, and whatever evidence could have helped investigators piece together the ambush that witnesses said was carried out by between two and four masked gunmen. The scene was littered with an estimated 300 beer cans and some 20 dead roosters.

"Obviously they're amateurs," Trevino said of the shooters.

Killed in the fray were 49-year-old Ramiro Garcia and his brother, 53-year-old Juan Santos Garcia, and 42-year-old Arturo Buentello Garza.

Trevino said Garza was likely a bystander, but the Garcias were well known to authorities for previous criminal activity, including drug possession. Trevino said one possibility is that it was revenge for a previous drive-by shooting, though he did not provide details.

"We believe there are a lot of different groups that had it in for the Garcias," which will make it difficult to pinpoint the group responsible for the attack, Trevino said.

The shooting had no connection to violence in Mexico, he said. "This was strictly a local issue."

Trevino's comments came shortly after arraignment hearings Friday for 51-year-old Heriberto Leandro; his wife, 52-year-old Leticia Leandro; and 37-year-old Humberto Blanco. They were taken in for questioning the night of the attack and arrested later Thursday morning.

The Leandros owned the small ranch. Heriberto Leandro built the corrugated metal pavilion that covered the bleachers and ring. He told investigators he had tried his hand at running the fights but didn't make money at it so instead rented the facility to Blanco.

All three were held on $1 million bonds, each charged with one count of cockfighting and one count of engaging in organized criminal activity. None spoke at the hearing or had an attorney present.

Trevino said the eight people injured, including two who remained in critical condition, would eventually face misdemeanor cockfighting charges.

The crowd is usually highly scrutinized at the gate and witnesses told investigators the shooters jumped out of a vehicle, leading Trevino to suspect they may have been smuggled in. Their masks led investigators to speculate that people at the event probably knew their attackers.

Cockfights showcase battles between birds that have been fitted with sharp metal blades or curved spikes on their legs. Spectators gamble on which bird will be victorious in the sometimes hourlong fights that end when one or both of the birds are dead or maimed. The last state to ban cockfighting was Louisiana, in 2008.

The operation makes its money off the entrance fee paid by participants and the beer and tacos sold at the concession stand, Trevino said. The house does not typically take a cut of the bets made among attendees.

"This is a big, big business," Trevino said. "You can generate a lot of money in this."

In addition to the gunmen, investigators are focusing their attention on two figures Trevino said are at the top of the area's cockfighting scene. One is a local business owner, and the other is a major broker of cockfights. Trevino did not identify either person.

Authorities are also pursuing forfeiture of the property involved.

Anonymous callers have offered authorities numerous tips since the shooting, but Trevino expressed frustration that no one reported the cockfighting earlier.

"What upsets me is that the neighbors have known about this for years," Trevino said. "All they had to do was pick up the phone and say, 'Hey we have a heck of an illegal activity next door. Please don't use my name, but do something about it,' and I guarantee we would have."

HTC EVO Design 4G coming to Boost Mobile 'end of this quarter'

HTC EVO Design 4G coming to Boost Mobile 'end of this quarter'

Boost customers might soon be able to bite off another bit of Android, according to Pocket Now. It's reporting that the HTC Evo Design 4G will be landing on the prepay network before the end of this quarter. It was running Gingerbread when we first got our hands on it, but will apparently be landing with Ice Cream Sandwich squeezed into its 1.2GHz single-core configuration. It's been a while since a new smartphone was offered up to the Boost faithful, so when the EVO 4G turns up it should be king of the pile, though we're not sure if it'll be asking an equally regal ransom when it does so.

Astronauts bid farewell to Space Shuttle Discovery ( video)

In recent days, John Glenn and other astronauts that have flown on Discovery have visited the retired orbiter to say their goodbyes.?

While NASA prepares to deliver the space shuttle Discovery to its final museum home, some high-profile guests have visited the vehicle over the past few months to bid their goodbyes: the men and women who helped build the iconic space plane, and the privileged few who flew on it.

Skip to next paragraph The Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off for the last time on February 24, 2011.

The shuttle Discovery is scheduled to fly from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Washington, D.C.?atop a modified Boeing 747 aircraft?on April 17, weather permitting. It will be delivered to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., to be placed on public display for posterity.

But before the orbiter departs from its soon-to-be-former Florida home port, many special visitors have come to say farewell, said Stephanie Stilson, NASA's flow director for the transition and?retirement of the space shuttles?at the Kennedy Space Center.

"There are a number of people who have come back for one last opportunity to sit in the seat and experience it," Stilson told SPACE.com. "Our center director, Bob Cabana, flew on Discovery multiple times, and he has gone into Discovery many times before, but he had his moment to say goodbye. Mike Coats, who is the center director at the Johnson Space Center, came by, and others too."

In February, during celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of?John Glenn?becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, Cabana and Glenn climbed aboard Discovery and posed for pictures on the shuttle's flight deck. [Photos: Inside Shuttle Discovery]

Glenn was a member of NASA's first astronaut class, and his Friendship 7 flight, on Feb. 20, 1962, was one of several important milestones that came out of the agency's so-called Project Mercury.

In 1998, at age 77, Glenn became the world's oldest astronaut after flying to space again on the shuttle Discovery's STS-95 mission.

Cabana is a veteran of four space shuttle missions, including two flights aboard Discovery. Cabana piloted Discovery on the STS-41 mission in 1990 and the STS-53 mission in 1992.

Other current and retired astronauts have visited Discovery since the orbiter was retired from service, Stilson said, as well as engineers who have helped build and maintain the vehicles over the course of NASA's 30-year program.

"It is nice to get to share that with them one more time and hear their experiences, and share their stories of what they were able to do with these great vehicles," Stilson said.

What is The Point of a Dissertation?

Cast your mind back to when you started your degree? okay; now think about the word count of your essays. They were small, weren?t they? About 2,000 words? Now think about your second year? your workload increased from your first year, didn?t it? So naturally, in your final year, your workload should trump that of your first year, which is the natural progression of any degree. You have been studying your degree, for a number of years and in order to graduate, you must be able to convince your university that you can demonstrate authority over a topic of your choice. Just think of your dissertation as an extended essay, which is different from a thesis. Many people get these two terms confused, a thesis is your idea, and the dissertation is the document that supports your thesis. A dissertation should show that you have a throughout grasp of the appropriate techniques and methodologies ? this is what your degree, undergraduate or postgraduate has been building up to.

Alas, do not be daunted by your word-count, as most people who have written a dissertation will agree that during the writing and editing process, they could have done with more words.

In the overall scope of the things, writing a dissertation takes time, organisation, and skills all of which are transferrable skills that will enable you to find work.

You have spent weeks in a library trawling through books, and you have spent countless hours analysing data that you collected from a questionnaire you developed. From there you structured your argument accordingly, the introduction, body, and conclusion are methodically worked out, and from there you editing and editing and editing. Do not think that your dissertation is a waste of time, as none of these skills you develop along the road to completion are arbitrary, and they will help you to find employment in your field, another field, or to continue as a postgraduate or research student. Dissertations give you training in research, surveying, analysing, and reviewing, in addition to a communication skills such as writing; so I suppose you could say that the process of research and writing a dissertation provides you with positive life skills.

A dissertation is your chance to show those academics how an intelligent and clever you are, and improve your prospects of getting a job after you graduate; proofreading services will help you along your way.
