She's A Brick? House | Young House Love

She?s A Brick? House

Note: Our heads are still spinning from the terrible tragedy in Connecticut on Friday. We?re sending lots of love to everyone up there and holding Clara close. Our friend Roo, who has three small children and only lives a few towns away from Sandy Hook wrote a post about how we can help, so for anyone looking for ways to make a small difference, here?s that link.

Some brick-painting happened in the sunroom?

Which we don?t think will surprise/sadden nearly anyone on the interweb since we heard so many war cries of ?paint that brick!? after sharing our last sunroom post?

We even got a bunch of more passionate and detailed pleas like: ?I?m never one for painting brick but that?s such a weird shape that?s cut off at the top and doesn?t look good from the living room at all? so paint that brick!?

This used to be the view from the couch that I stared at every. single. night. for the last 2+ years, so? I was ready.

So after considering everything from whitewashing it to distressing it (which would make it more of an accent then just letting it fall back and blend in) it was time to PAINT! THAT! BRICK! Feel free to shout that a la Ty Pennington?s MOVE! THAT! BUS!

As predicted, it looks a lot better from the living room now. Whew.

Oh and this view demonstrates why we didn?t feel like drywalling over the brick in the sunroom to hide it, since:

  • that?s a lot of work/dust (plus it wouldn?t match up perfectly with the drywalled lip above it anyway)
  • there?s still painted brick in the adjoined living room anyway
  • we actually love the texture of painted brick, which we had on two walls of our first house?s den

Holy cow, check out the dollhouse in the two pictures above. Not a thing has moved in the almost-a-week between this paint job and that last picture. But the floor mat near the slider along with Clara?s Uglydoll are nowhere to be seen. Better remind Clara that the dollhouse is still there (and it?s a better toy than moving the floor mat around, haha). She?s been pretty into playing in the sunroom now that it?s not full of hazards and old furniture anymore, so maybe that has been taking the focus away from her ?furniture rearranging skills? (aka: the dresser-and-bed-switching/throwing/hiding Olympics that her dollhouse provides).

Oh and we got a few questions about why we didn?t just clad the whole wall in wood or make some sort of rustic accent on the triangle above the brick, but the major thing that we?re trying to downplay about this room are all the crazy angles. See how the ceiling slopes waaaay to the right on that wall?

Well if you turn around it slopes to the left. So yes, it?s basically a spaceship of a room with a diagonal peak in the ceiling that slopes from corner to corner. As in it looks like someone glued an angular and modern room onto a flat little brick house. So we want to downplay those zany angles and help everything flow so it feels like it belongs here with the rest of the house. Which is why a nice blanket of gray paint over all the walls and ceilings was the name of the game.

For all of you visual folks, this is what it would look like (per some bad photoshop) if we had accented it somehow ? with wood, brick, etc. See how it would emphasize that weird slope? Which would totally fit into a super modern house with other slopes and lofted rooms (like Gloria and Jay?s house on Modern Family), but we just didn?t think it would go with the rest of our non-slanty-or-futuristic house.

So grease paint was the word. And in some insane gift from the home improvement gods, it only took two coats (brick suuuuucks up paint, so we thought it would take four, which is our usual experience with it). We didn?t use any sort of primer ? since we didn?t back when we painted the brick in our den and that worked out for us ? and as usual I wielded the brush (for getting into all of those cracks ? yeah, there were about a million).

My name is Sherry and I paint cracks by the dozen. Meanwhile John rolled using a nappy roller, which helps to coat textured surfaces more than a super smooth one does.

We actually got nearly the whole thing done during a Clara nap, so you can go ahead and file this under ?Christmas miracle.? And my hope for anyone else who is painting brick is that it?s as quick and painless as this job was. Even all that crack painting could have been muuuuch worse (painting every crack twice beats painting every crack four times, if you know what I mean).

Here?s what they looked like before I got to them with the brush, but after John rolled. They were sneaky little buggers.

And just for fun, here?s what Burger does while we work away in the background (don?t mind my inside-out-sleepwear-as-painting-clothes). #hubbahubba

The good news is that the nice even coverage that we eventually accomplished made a huge difference. Now when you?re in the room it feels more cohesive and a lot less chopped up. And we think adding some nice art to that wall will further take the focus away from any difference between drywall and painted brick (our first house?s den had two walls of paneling and two walls of brick, but once it was all painted with furniture and art and curtains it was barely noticeable).

Just to save you some scrolling, here?s the full after of that wall again. It?s definitely a lot of gray, but we?re just getting started?

?And here?s what it looked like before.

Why didn?t we do this sooner? Over two years of staring at a weird U-shaped brick blob in the next room is two years too long.

I can?t wait to hang some art on the brick wall to make that off-center window fit right in. Sing it with me: ?white frames, white frames, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?? Thought you guys would like some Inner Circle on a Monday morning. No? How about some more bad photoshop then? And actually, I think we might work some wood frames/items into the mix too. Might be fun and eclectic.

But even without any frames, it?s a definite improvement just to have broken out some fresh paint. Basically blanketing this room in taupey-gray has done five things:

  • it draws the eye out the windows to the pretty trees outside (the windows/view are definitely the stars of this room)
  • it downplays all the crazy ceiling angles and the choppy-looking brick-cut-off conundrum by unifying everything
  • it allows things like the colorful cushions on the daybed to stand out in a way that they couldn?t when they had to compete with the dark brick
  • it makes the floor look a lot less yellowed and old (brings out the gray undertones instead of the yellow ones)
  • it makes the white window trim and molding pop like crazy, so the room feels crisp and updated

Of course we still have a long way to go when it comes to the furniture arrangement. We?re just using things we already have in the meantime, but eventually I?m sure a lot of things will get moved/upgraded/painted/etc. And we still have to bring in a rug, art, and all that jazz. And don?t mind that sad wrinkly sheet on the daybed of those orange slabs of wood along each slider where it meets the floor. Let?s just say that a ton of things are just waiting to be ?attended to.? But the middle makes no sense anyway! Haha. What did you guys do this weekend? Can you tell I?m all jittery and weird? We?re hosting Christmas dinner for the first time ever (for fifteen people ? four of which are under the age of four!) so it should be a whole lotta crazy. As expected, I can?t wait. You know I love the crazy?

Psst- To see this little sunroom makeover from the beginning, click here to read about phase 1 (planning, furniture placement) and here for the details on phase 2 (painting the lofted room and ceiling).

Psssst- Speaking of paint, one of the most freeing things about writing our book was that it allowed us to chose paint colors that don?t necessarily have to fit right into our house, so we?re over here chatting about stretching our color comfort zone.

Scientists discover evidence of giant panda's population history and local adaptation

Dec. 16, 2012 ? A research team, led by Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and BGI, has successfully reconstructed a continuous population history of the giant panda from its origin to the present. The findings suggested whereas global changes in climate were the primary drivers in panda population fluctuation for millions of years, human activities were likely to underlie recent population divergence and serious decline. This work reveals a good example for assessing and establishing the best conservation method for other endangered species.

The latest study was published online in Nature Genetics.

The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family. Looked upon as the ambassador for all endangered species, it is a well-recognized symbol of international wildlife conservation. The giant panda is currently threatened by continued habitat loss, human persecution, among others. Its dietary specialization, habitat isolation, and reproductive constraints have led to a perception that this is a species at an "evolutionary dead end," destined for deterministic extinction in the modern world.

In this study, researchers carried out whole genome resequencing of 34 wild giant pandas and found the current six geographic populations of giant panda could be divided into three genetic populations, including Qinling (QIN), Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL). Through reconstructing giant panda's population history, they found several important evolutionary events such as two population expansions, two bottlenecks and two population divergences.

The giant panda has a very special bamboo diet, while its ancestor was omnivorous or carnivores. As early as about 3 Myr ago, they probably had already completed their dietary swift and pygmy panda emerged with bamboo as its primary diet. The warm and wet weather at that time provided ideal conditions for the spread of bamboo forests that further led to the first population expansion of giant panda. However, about 0.7 Myr ago, the panda population began to decline due to the two largest Pleistocene glaciations happened in China, and its first population bottleneck occurred at about 0.3 Myr ago. During that period, pygmy panda was gradually replaced by another subspecies -- baconi panda that has larger body size.

After the retreat of the Penultimate Glaciations, giant panda's second population expansion happened and it reached its population peak between 30~50 thousand years (kyr) ago. The warm weather in the Greatest Lake Period (30~40 kyr ago) and alpine conifer forest may play an important role in the flourishing of the panda population. However, during the period of last glacial maximum (LGM), the climate was cold, dry, and inhospitable with frequent storms and a dust-laden atmosphere. Under such harsh environment, extensive panda habitats were loss and its second population bottleneck occurred.

The more recent panda population history showed that the panda population separated into Qinling (QIN) and non-QIN populations at about 0.3Myr ago, and then the non-QIN cluster diverged into two populations, the Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL) at about 2.8 KYA ago. Subsequently, the three populations were different in the ways of fluctuation. For example, there was a drastic decline in the QIN, a slight increase in the MIN and a more remarkable growth in the QXL populations.

Researchers identified the signals of panda's local adaptation. They found the largest group of selected genes in these populations was related to sensory system. However, the two genes, Tas2r49 and Tas2r3, were associated with bitter taste and were under directional selection between the QIN and non-QIN populations, showing no signal of directional selection between MIN and QXL populations.

As a form of olfactory communication, odor perception is crucial for reproduction and survival of giant pandas in the dense forest. Researchers found the MIN and QXL populations had fewer directionally selected genes than QIN and non-QIN, suggesting less variation happens in the selection processes between MIN and QXL. They also found the evidence that population fluctuations were driven by global climate shifts, but recent human activities have likely caused population divergence and the serious recent decline.

Shancen Zhao, Project Manager from BGI, said, "We have identified three genetic populations of giant panda for the current six geographic populations lived in western of China. The varied local adaptations found in our study provide invaluable resource for researchers to better select effective conservation methods to rescue the giant panda even other endangered species. The translocation of wild-caught individuals or releasing the captive-bred ones may be a feasible approach. "

(AP) ? Jim Boeheim called it just another number. The message board in the Carrier Dome didn't agree.

Moments after his third-ranked Syracuse Orange held off Detroit for a 72-68 victory Monday night in the Gotham Classic, making Boeheim just the third Division I men's coach to reach 900 wins, Hall of Famer Dave Bing, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Louisville's Rick Pitino offered congratulations on the big screens inside the Teflon dome as the hometown faithful cheered.

Boeheim, 68 and in his 37th year at his alma mater, is 900-304 and joined an elite fraternity. Krzyzewski (936) and Bob Knight (902) are the only other men's Division I coaches to win that many games.

"To me, it's just a number," said Boeheim, whose first victory was against Harvard in 1976. "If I get 900, have I got to get more? That's why maybe it's just not that important to me because to me it's just a number, and the only number that matters is how this team does."

So far, it's done OK.

James Southerland had 22 points for Syracuse (10-0), which increased its home winning streak to 30 games, longest in the nation. Detroit (6-5), which lost 77-74 at St. John's in the second game of the season and 74-61 at Pitt earlier this month, had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Bing, Boeheim's college roommate, teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, and Roosevelt Bouie, a star on Boeheim's first team in 1976-77, were in the Carrier Dome crowd of 17,902.

Bing was standing tall in the locker room after the game.

"Nobody would have thought when we came here 50 years ago that either one of us would have had the kind of success we've had," said Bing, today the mayor of Detroit. "I'm so pleased and proud of him because he stuck with it. He's proven that he's one of the best coaches ever in college basketball, and he'll be No. 2 shortly."

After a victory that nearly was short-circuited, Boeheim was presented a jersey encased in glass with 900 emblazoned on it.

"I'm happy. I've stayed around long enough. I was a little nervous," Boeheim said at center court. "I'm proud to be here. To win this game is more pressure than I've felt in a long time. I wasn't thinking about losing until the end. That wouldn't have been a good thing to happen, but it very well could have."

Indeed.

Midway through the second half with Syracuse dominating, fans were given placards featuring cardboard cutouts of Boeheim's face with 900 wins printed on the back to wave in celebration. But when the public address announcer in the Carrier Dome invited fans to stick around for the postgame ceremony, the Titans roared back.

Juwan Howard Jr., who finished with 18 points, scored 14 over the last 6 minutes to key a 16-0 run, his two free throws pulling Detroit within 67-63 with 55.1 seconds left after the Titans had trailed by 20 with 6:09 to play.

"You know what, I didn't hear it, but the players probably heard because they sure came alive," Detroit coach Ray McCallum said. "This is a big stage. Guys sitting around the hotel watching television getting ready to play the No. 3 team in the country and they're talking about going for 900 wins, coach Boeheim. That's a lot for a young man to digest."

Michael Carter-Williams hit three of four free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.

"Michael made big-time free throws you've got to make. If he misses a couple, it's a new game. That was the difference," Boeheim said. "We have not been in that situation. Hopefully, we'll learn from that."

Carter-Williams finished with 10 assists and 12 points, his sixth straight double-double.

"It was great to be part of this," Carter-Williams said. "It's a part of history."

Doug Anderson scored 18 points and Nick Minnerath had 13 for Detroit. Ray McCallum Jr., the coach's son and Detroit's leading scorer at 19.4 points per game, finished with nine, while Jason Calliste had seven.

Southerland scored a career-high 35 points, matching a school record with nine 3-pointers, in a win at Arkansas in late November and, after an 0-for-10 slump over three games, found his range again Saturday night with three 3s in a win over Canisius. He finished 5 of 8 from behind the arc against the Titans.

One of the keys to breaking Syracuse's 2-3 zone is hitting the long ball, and Detroit struck out in the first half. The Titans were 0 for 10 and the lone 3 they did make ? by McCallum with just over 6 minutes left ? was negated by a shot-clock violation.

Detroit could only lament what might have been if a couple had gone in.

"We never gave up. That's a tribute to our team," Howard said. "We had the right attitude. We played a tough opponent. You usually don't want a moral victory, but we can take some positives from this game."

Syracuse plays again Saturday against Temple in Madison Square Garden, and the Orange faithful are likely to be out in numbers as they usually are when the team plays there.

Boeheim was effusive in praise of the support the team has received during his long tenure. Syracuse has had 71 crowds of over 30,000 since the Carrier Dome opened in 1980 and holds the NCAA on-campus record of 34,616, set nearly three years ago against Villanova.

"The support of fans cannot be overestimated," he said. "You have to have that kind of support in your building to bring recruits in, to help you play better. We've had a tremendous loyal fan base. That's why I always felt this was a great place to coach and why I never really thought about going anywhere else. The support from the fans is the No. 1 thing you have to have."

Prosecutors appeal anti-paparazzi charge dismissal

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Prosecutors Wednesday appealed the dismissal of anti-paparazzi driving charges against a photographer accused of recklessly chasing Justin Bieber on a Los Angeles freeway earlier this year.

The appeal argues that Superior Court Judge Thomas Rubinson erred last month when he dismissed two counts filed under California's 2010 anti-paparazzi law against Paul Raef, a freelance photographer. The judge dismissed the charges on grounds that the 2010 law used to charge him was overly broad and violates the First Amendment.

The judge's ruling could set "a dangerous precedent" that newsgatherers can drive recklessly without facing stiffer penalties, the prosecutors' filing states.

The law raised the penalty for those who drive dangerously in pursuit of photos for commercial gain, but Rubinson said that could be applied to wedding photographers and many other professions.

The offense is punishable by six months in jail and a $2,500 fine but went unused until Raef was involved in the freeway chase of Bieber that topped 80 mph and prompted several 911 calls.

Raef's attorneys, David S. Kestenbaum and Brad Kaiserman, said they had not yet been served with the full appeal, including the prosecutors' exhibits, but had reviewed a filing summarizing their arguments.

Prosecutors are mistakenly arguing that the statute regulates conduct instead of speech and the ruling should be upheld, they wrote in a statement.

"Judge Rubinson, in ruling that the statute was an overbroad regulation of speech, gave a decision that was appropriate, well-reasoned, and an accurate interpretation of First Amendment law, and we believe that the reviewing court will uphold his decision," Kestenbaum and Kaiserman wrote.

Rubinson said when ruling Nov. 14 that lawmakers should have simply raised the penalties for all types of reckless driving. The appeal states the judge should have deferred to the way California lawmakers decided to target reckless driving by paparazzi.

"It was not the trial court's role to substitute its views for those of the Legislature and strike down a valid statute because it felt there were other 'effective' ways to address the problem," the filing states.

Raef still faces traditional reckless driving charges for the July chase involving Bieber on a freeway. That case is temporarily on hold. Raef has not yet entered a plea.

The law used to charge Raef was influenced by the experiences of Jennifer Aniston, who provided details to a lawmaker on being unable to drive away after she was surrounded by paparazzi on Pacific Coast Highway.
