LOL: Some students to major in social media

Philosophy majors may finally be off the hook. Some students are taking up a major that will be sure to confound parents who are shelling out thousands for their kids' college educations: Social media. OMG!

Alas, this does not mean that everyone obsessed with their Facebook status updates is now eligible for an advanced degree.

But some students will be able to major in a new multidisciplinary degree at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina. Surfaced by Bizjournals, the degree, as reported by the local Columbia, South Carolina, station WACH FOX 57, is apparently one of the first of its kind.

And for those who think it's all Foursquare check-ins and Tumblr photos of cats, think again. "It's a blended major of graphic design, communications, business and marketing, psychology, and statistics," Newberry College's Associate Professor Tania Sosiak told the station.

It's also a smart way to entice entrepreneurial-minded students to stay in school. (And a great excuse to tell parents all those texts and tweets aren't a waste of time--they're homework.)

And it may be one small step to stem the tide of those heading out of the classroom and into the start-up garage.

Famously, the co-founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, started his business while at Harvard, and left to run it. Ditto Bill Gates, who left Harvard to start Microsoft.

The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs also had no use for school. As he famously said when he gave the commencement address at Stanford University, "I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made."

Now PayPal founder Peter Thiel has made an offer some students can't refuse: $100,000 to become college dropouts--and start their own businesses.

And a recent story in the New York Times documented students who "just say no" to college.

The Times article quotes Benjamin Goering, who dropped out of the University of Kansas to get a job at a software company in San Francisco. He said,? "Education isn't a four-year program. It's a mind-set."

For those who choose to get their education the traditional way with a nontraditional degree, there are drawbacks.

As a commenter on the Bizjournal story, Mitchell Morgan wrote, "Can I borrow $50,000 for a college degree so I can tweet my whines about my unpayable student loan debt from my parents' basement?"

The new major will be offered starting in August 2013.

The 'Metabolically Healthy but Obese' Body Type | Today I Will

The ?Metabolically Healthy but Obese? Body Type

Are all obese individuals at high risk for adverse health outcomes? Well, it is well-established that obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and many other serious health problems such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer. It would be hard to find a health and fitness professional that is unaware that current rates of obesity in the U.S. are at an all-time high; with a current prevalence of ~35% in both men and women. However, not everyone is aware that a subset of obese individuals exist who seem to have protection against many of the complications of obesity. Such individuals have been described as being ?metabolically healthy but obese?.

In most published papers which examine its? health risks, obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of >30 kg/m2. However, the use of BMI exclusively to identify obesity has limitations. For example, because BMI cannot discriminate between lean mass and fat mass, it can falsely identify extremely muscular individuals as being obese. Thus, it is helpful to have additional measures of obesity such as percent body fat in order to truly determine who is obese and who is not. Additionally, the overwhelming majority of ?obesity and health risk? papers do not measure the physical fitness level of study participants; failing to do so can further muddy the waters. ?If your curious as to what your BMI is, you can calculate it on our Weigh Your Risk Tool but remember the points I made above when you receive your result. It also asks for waist circumference which helps to increase the strength of the tool.

A recent paper in the European Heart Journal1 helped shed some light on this interesting ?metabolically healthy but obese? population. A total of 33,882 apparently healthy adult men and women who underwent a comprehensive physical exam at the Cooper Clinic were included in the study.? Participants underwent measurement of cardiorespiratory fitness (via a maximal treadmill exercise test), BMI, waist circumference, percent body fat, resting blood pressure, and fasting blood chemistry. Participants were identified as being obese if they had a BMI >30 kg/m2 or a percent body fat >25% (males) or >30% (females). Participants were identified as having the metabolic syndrome if they had more than one of the following at baseline:

  • Resting blood pressure >130/85 mmHg or history of physician-diagnosed hypertension
  • Fasting blood triglyceride level >150 mg/dl
  • HDL cholesterol <40 mg/dl (males) or <50 mg/dl (females)
  • Fasting blood glucose level >100 mg/dl or history of physician-diagnosed diabetes

Obese participants were identified as ?metabolically healthy but obese? if they had none or just one of the four criteria listed above. Normal weight participants were defined as those with a BMI between 18-5-24.9 kg/m2 or percent body fat <25% (males) or <30% (females), and were identified as being ?metabolically healthy? in the same manner just described.

A comparison was then made between three groups at baseline and after an average follow-up period of 14.3 years. For simplicity sake, I will refer to Group number in the rest of this article.

  • Group 1: Metabolically healthy and normal percent body fat
  • Group 2: Metabolically healthy but obese
  • Group 3: Metabolic syndrome and obese

At baseline, it was found that 46.3% of the percent body fat-defined obese individuals were in Group 2. Regardless of whether BMI or percent body fat was used to identify obesity, Group 2 had a significantly higher level of cardiorespiratory fitness than Group 3, while Group 1 had a significantly higher fitness level than both Groups 2 and 3.

During the 14 year follow-up period, 1779 of the study participants died. Not surprisingly, the majority of deaths were from cardiovascular disease (n=546) and cancer (n=698). Because percent body fat is a more accurate measure of adiposity than BMI, the paper focused mostly on percent body fat when examining mortality rates between the three groups. Rates of all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality in Group 2 were significantly lower than in Group 3, and were actually very similar to rates in Group 1 (see Figure below).

The authors of this paper have shown convincingly not only that Group 2 had a significantly higher level of cardiorespiratory fitness than Group 3, but also that Group 2? had significantly less all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality than Group 3.? Thus, the ?metabolically healthy but obese? individual seems to have a relatively benign form of obesity. Because regular physical activity has a beneficial effect not only on fitness level, but also on the components of metabolic syndrome, it is imperative that Group 3 individuals meet public health guidelines for physical activity* with the goal of moving to the Group 2 category. Doing so will presumably significantly reduce their risk of mortality even though they remain obese.?

*Perform at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity aerobic activity and at least 2 days per week of strength activity.

More than 2 hours of TV a day adds significantly to children's waist size, American Journal of Preventive Medicine reports

San Diego, CA, December 11, 2012 The average American child from age 8 to 18 watches about 4.5 hours of TV each day. Seventy percent have a TV in the bedroom and about one-third of youth aged 6-19 is considered obese. Previous studies have shown that TV viewing time during childhood and adolescence continues into adulthood, resulting in overweight and elevated total cholesterol. An investigative team from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA reports new study findings, establishing the relationship between having and watching TV in the bedroom and childhood obesity, specifically high waist circumference.

"The established association between TV and obesity is predominantly based on BMI. The association between TV and fat mass, adiposity stored in specific depots (including abdominal subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue), and cardiometabolic risk, is less well understood," says lead investigator Peter T. Katzmarzyk, PhD. "It is hypothesized that higher levels of TV viewing and the presence of a TV in the bedroom are associated with depot-specific adiposity and cardiometabolic risk."

Between 2010 and 2011, 369 children and adolescents aged 5-18 in Baton Rouge, representing a balance between gender, ethnicity, age, and BMI status, were evaluated for a variety of factors, such as waist circumference, resting blood pressure, fasting triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and glucose, fat mass, and stomach fat.

Statistical analysis of the data developed produced two models. Together, these models revealed that children with a TV in the bedroom were more likely to watch more TV. These children also were shown to have more fat and subcutaneous adipose tissue mass, as well as higher waist circumference, when compared with their peers who did not have a bedroom TV. Study participants with a TV in the bedroom and those who watched TV more than two hours a day were each associated with up to 2.5 times the odds of the highest levels of fat mass. Viewing five or more hours a day produced an association of two times the odds of being in the top quartile for visceral adipose tissue mass. Further, a bedroom TV associated with three times the odds of elevated cardiometabolic risk, elevated waist circumference, and elevated triglycerides.

"There was a stronger association between having a TV in the bedroom versus TV viewing time, with the adiposity and health outcomes," notes study co-author Amanda Staiano, PhD. "A bedroom TV may create additional disruptions to healthy habits, above and beyond regular TV viewing. For instance, having a bedroom TV is related to lower amounts of sleep and lower prevalence of regular family meals, independent of total TV viewing time. Both short sleep duration and lack of regular family meals have been related to weight gain and obesity."

Questions of war crimes remain as Israel shifts explanation on strike that killed 10 people from same family

Two members of the Al Dalu family, Mohammad and Raneen Al Dalu were found under the rubble four days after the Israeli military airstrike that killed nine members of the same family, Gaza, November 22, 2012. (Photo by: Anne Paq/Activestills.org)

One of the most enduring images from the latest Israeli attack on Gaza is the picture of?four dead children from the al-Dalou family. The Israeli airstrike on the al-Dalou home in central Gaza was one of the deadliest single attacks during the Gaza assault, killing 10 members of the family as well as two of their neighbors.

And now, Israel is shifting their explanation as to how the deadly strike that caused the most controversy during the fighting happened. The latest explanation is that the attack was a deliberate one, the target of which was a Hamas member. The scrambling to find a line of reasoning to sell to the international community is indicative of how much attention has been given to the strike, and how much attention it will continue to command in the weeks ahead as human rights groups issue reports on the latest assault. Questions have been raised as to whether Israel committed a war crime in this specific case (though there are plenty more allegations of war crimes that will be aired as a result of the overall Israeli assault, too).

The bombing occurred on November 18. The Israeli air force strike?brought the three-story home of the family crashing down, as Reuters reported. Four children and four women were among the dead. It quickly became a symbol of the effects of Israel?s bombardments, which on the whole?largely harmed civilians during the one week assault.

At first, the Israeli military claimed?they were targeting the commander of Hamas? rocket launching operations, a man supposedly named Yihia Abayah. But the al-Dalou family knew nothing of this person.

After it became clear that the strike had wiped out an entire family, Israel?s story was scrutinized.?Haaretz reported November 18?that the air force ?mistakenly bombed the home of one of [Rabiah?s] neighbors, Mohammed a-Dallo, killing 10 members of his family and two of his neighbors. Rabiah seems to have survived the attack.??

Ex-"Malcolm in the Middle" star Muniz, 26, suffers mini-stroke

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former "Malcolm in the Middle" child star Frankie Muniz said on Tuesday he had suffered a mini-stroke, at the age of 26.

"I was in the hospital last Friday. I suffered a 'Mini Stroke', which was not fun at all. Have to start taking care of my body! Getting old!," Muniz said on Twitter.

Muniz put his acting career on hold six years ago to race cars for a living, and earlier this year he joined a rock band.

According to celebrity website TMZ.com, Muniz was taken ill in Arizona last Friday when friends noticed he was having trouble speaking and understanding.

Mini-strokes usually affect those over the age of 55. They are temporary interruptions of blood flow to part of the brain but do not kill brain tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Muniz's agent did not return calls for comment.

Muniz played the title role in the hit TV comedy "Malcolm in the Middle" for six years, and appeared in teen movies "Big Fat Liar" and "Agent Cody Banks."

When the TV show ended its run in 2006, Muniz said he was stepping away from acting to pursue a full-time career as a race-car driver. Earlier his year he joined Pennsylvania-based indie band Kingsfoil as a drummer.

Muniz is due to turn 27 on Wednesday.

Botswana to ban big game hunting by 2014

GABORONE, Botswana (AP) ? Botswana says it will ban hunting by 2014 because of fears that the nation is losing its wildlife.

The nation's Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism made the announcement Thursday, saying the decision comes after President Ian Khama said hunting must be stopped to save the nation's big game animals. The ministry said that, left unchecked, rampant hunting would be a "genuine threat" to the country's wildlife.

The ministry said hunts by local communities and with special hunting licenses would still be allowed.

Botswana, a nation in southern Africa of 581,730 square kilometers (224,610 square miles), is home to the massive Kalahari Desert and large national parks. It has elephants, lions, giraffes and many other wild animals, making it a popular destination for big game hunters.
