AP Exclusive: Disney, Sears used factory in fire

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? Amid the ash, broken glass and melted sewing machines at what is left of the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory, there are piles of blue, red and off-white children's shorts bearing Wal-Mart's Faded Glory brand. Shorts from hip-hop star Sean Combs' ENYCE label lay on the floor and are stacked in cartons.

An Associated Press reporter searching the factory Wednesday found these and other clothes, including sweaters from the French company Teddy Smith, among the equipment charred in the fire that killed 112 workers Saturday. He also found entries in account books indicating that the factory took orders to produce clothes for Disney, Sears and other Western brands.

Garments and documents left behind in the factory show it was used by a host of major American and European retailers, though at least one of them ? Wal-Mart ? had been aware of safety problems. Wal-Mart blames a supplier for using Tazreen Fashions without its knowledge.

The fire has elevated awareness of something labor groups, retailers and governments have known for years: Bangladesh's fast-growing garment industry ? second only to China's in exports ? is rife with dangerous workplaces. More than 300 workers there have died in fires since 2006.

Police on Wednesday arrested three factory officials suspected of locking in the workers who died in Saturday's fire, the deadliest in the South Asian country's less than 35-year history of exporting clothing.

Local police chief Habibur Rahman said the three will be questioned amid reports that many workers trying to escape the blaze had been locked inside. He said the owner of the factory was not among those arrested.

The three officials were arrested Wednesday at their homes in Savar, the Dhaka suburb where the factory is also located. Rahman did not identify the officials or give their job status.

About 1,400 workers worked at the plant, some 70 percent of them women. Most are from the north, the poorest region of Bangladesh.

Workers who survived the fire say exit doors were locked, and a fire official has said that far fewer people would have died if there had been even one emergency exit. Of the dead, 53 bodies were burned so badly they could not be identified; they were buried anonymously.

The fire started on the ground floor, where a factory worker named Nasima said stacks of yarn and clothes blocked part of the stairway.

Nasima, who uses only one name, and other workers said that when they tried to flee, managers told them to go back to their work stations, but they were ignored.

Dense smoke filled the stairway, making it hard to see, and when the lights went out the workers were left in total darkness. Another worker, Mohammad Rajib, said some people used their cellphones to light their way.

"Everyone was screaming for help," Nasima said. "Total chaos, panic and screaming. Everyone was trying to escape and come out. I was pulling the shirt of a man. I fainted and when I woke up I found myself lying on the road outside the factory.

"I don't know how I survived."

Rajiv said the factory conducted a fire drill just three days before the fire broke out, but no one used the fire extinguishers. "Only a selected group of workers are trained to use the extinguishers. Others have no idea how to use them," he said.

The AP reporter who examined the factory Wednesday saw dozens of fire extinguishers with tags indicating they were inspected early this month. Many appeared unused.

Workers expressed support for the factory owner, Delwar Hossain. Rajib said he is "a gentle man" who heeded workers when they protested for more pay and against rough behavior by some managers.

"He took action and fired some of them," he said. "He did not sack any worker. He told us (the workers): 'You are my people. If you survive, I will survive.'"

Now windows at the eight-story factory are broken, sewing machines melted or burned to ash. Much of the clothing on the lower floors was incinerated. Nightgowns, children's shorts, pants, jackets and sweat shirts were strewn about, piled up in some places, boxed in others.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Interior Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir have said arson is suspected. Police say they have not ruled out sabotage.

Wal-Mart had received an audit deeming the factory "high risk" last year, said it had decided to stop doing business with Tazreen, but that a supplier subcontracted work to the factory anyway. Wal-Mart said it stopped working with that supplier on Monday.

Calls made to The Walt Disney Company and to Sears Holdings were not immediately returned.

Local TV reports said about 3,000 garment workers held protests over the fire Wednesday, blocking roads and throwing stones at some factories and vehicles. It was the third straight day of demonstrations, and as they did previously, factories in the area closed to avoid violence.

Police used batons to disperse the protesters, but no injuries were immediately reported.

According to local television, most factories in the area closed after opening briefly because of the protests ? a common tactic to avoid violence.

Oops! Facebook admits to adding users to groups they left

If you're confused over a recent email from Facebook regarding its data use policy, you're not alone.? The email ? with the subject line "Up... Read more

A software glitch caused many Facebook users to find themselves members of old groups, ones they may have left a long time ago. More uncomfortably, some people were suddenly members of groups they'd even?been kicked out of. Facebook issued a statement confirming the details.

"A bug surfaced last night that caused some users to be re-added to groups that they previously belonged to," a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News. "We are working to resolve the issue now. In the meantime, we are rolling out a short-term fix for all closed groups that will make the content of those groups inaccessible to the re-added members."

At first, this bug may seem like an annoyance, leading to little more than?a pile of unwanted?notifications?? that's what we saw firsthand. However,?there could be some pretty nasty side-effects. Before Facebook issued that short-term fix, individuals who were added to closed (or "secret") groups were able to view all the non-public content in those groups as well as the current membership rosters. This could leave some sensitive posts vulnerable (though you really shouldn't be posting anything of that nature on Facebook in the first place, whether publicly or privately).

Even public groups (or closed groups which have been turned public since a user left them) can cause issues, as their membership rosters are now visible to everyone.

"I guess you now know that I belonged to a 'Flava of Love' group," Alberto Lima, a blogger for Noisecast,?wrote in a Facebook message alerting me of the glitch. "I swear I never watched the show!" Sure, Alberto. Sure.

Great gifts you can afford for $25 or less

marblesthebrainstore.com

36 Cube is a game that challenges the mind. Think 3-D Sudoku.

By Herb Weisbaum

You don?t need to spend a lot to find nice holiday gifts for everyone on your list. You just need to know where to shop. The editors at ShopSmart magazine searched the web and found 25 sites that have unique gifts for $25 or less.

?A lot of gift guides start at $50, but we thought we should go lower,? said deputy editor Jody Rohlena.

?We looked for websites that people may not know about that offer a variety of great gifts at the $25 price point.?

Here?s a sample of what they found and recommend:

MarblesTheBrainStore.com lets you give the gift of intelligence for both kids and adults. The games and puzzles they sell are fun, but meant to build brainpower and increase creative thinking. A few examples: the Modern Art Memory Game, 36 Cube (think 3-D Sudoku) and Solitaire Chess.

Hipcycle.com specializes in green gifts that anyone would like. Everything it sells is made from stuff that would have gone to the landfill. They call this ?upcycling.? The items are cute, clever and unusual. For less than $25 you can get a colorful bracelet crafted from reclaimed tin, picture frames built with old shipping pallets or a cheese platter made from a flattened wine bottle. ShopSmart ordered a bowl made out of chopsticks. ?It?s beautiful,? Rohlena told me. ?The chopsticks were arranged so artfully. You have to see it to believe it."?

SetBoutique.com features a wonderful assortment of clothing, jewelry, bags and housewares from socially responsible manufacturers: bowls carved in Kenya, organic cotton tunics from Peru and silk handbags made in Cambodia. Spend $20 or more and the site will donate $5 to the charity of your choice.

Pier1.com is what you?d expect from this well-known retailer. This new website sells Pier 1?s eclectic mix of merchandise: from elf aprons to flashing lightbulb earrings. They also have a large selection of unusual salt and pepper shakers, including nutcrackers, chubby cats and flying pigs. For just $8, ShopSmart bought ?gorgeous? brass candle snuffers, hand-crafted in India.

Wag.com has reasonably priced pet products for the furry friend on your gift-giving list. Whether it?s a hoodie for the pooch, a mouse-shaped rope toy for the cat or a hand-woven bungalow for the rabbit in your life, they?ve got you covered.

OldTimeCandy.com specializes in retro candy. And who wouldn?t want to get a box of candy from their childhood for a gift? Choose from a variety of old favorites:? Pop Rocks, Mary Janes, Atomic Fireballs, Turkish Taffy, Pixy Stix, Bit-O-Honey, ?Zagnut, Goo Goo Clusters and many more sweet treats. Pick a favorite or put together your own collections. Smart Shop got two pounds of candy for $24.

Vat19.com sells what it describes as ?curiously awesome? products. These tongue-in-check gifts include a giant Gummy Bear on a stick (90 times bigger than the original), a flying alarm clock and a wine glass large enough to hold all the wine in the bottle.

Because ShopSmart is published by Consumer Reports, every recommended site has been vetted to make sure it?s a legitimate business, has a good privacy policy and user-friendly customer service. The editors also ordered several items from each site to see the merchandise themselves.

?25 Great Sites for Gifts Under $25? is in the December issue of ShopSmart Magazine.

Fantastic On-Hand Resource: The Homeschooling Book of Lists

I rarely find home education materials in big-box bookstores, so you can imagine my surprise when this book jumped off the shelf and into my hands. Michael and Mary Leppert?s comprehensive The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a resource I consult quite regularly. And here?s why: it?s jam packed with information.

More than just another guide to homeschooling, The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a compendium of homeschooling resources, publishers, suppliers, publications, websites, and other references. It?s divided into five major sections:

  • Things to Consider Before Homeschooling
  • Homeschooling Models and Methods
  • Subjects and Lesson Plans
  • Homeschooling Resources
  • Getting Your Homeschooled Student into College

Each section then branches out into a wide variety of topics to explore and consider. For example, Part 4, Homeschooling Resources, comprises 20 different lists, such as:

  • Various religious resource lists
  • Ethnic resources
  • Boxed curricula
  • Homeschooling with nonelectric games
  • Special needs resources
  • Tutors and tutoring
  • Testing and test prep
  • Charter schools and independent study programs

Of course, any print materials that list website URLs run the risk that those addresses won?t always be valid. The same holds true for this manual. However, a simple Google search enabled me to find whatever I needed, so this really isn?t an issue.

I?m always on the lookout for new and different resources to enrich my children?s education, but I don?t have a lot of time to devote to this particular activity. The Homeschooling Book of Lists?makes it easy for me. In fact, ?my own copy of this handy reference tool for busy homeschooling families boasts highlighted and dog-eared pages ? and for good reason!

Study points to potential new therapies for cancer and other diseases

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute (TRSI) are fueling the future of cancer treatment by improving a powerful tool in disease defense: the body's immune system. By revealing a novel but widespread cell signaling process, the scientists may have found a way to manipulate an important component of the immune system into more effectively fighting disease.

The study, recently published online ahead of print by the journal Blood, shows that disabling a particular enzyme, called ItpkB, in mice improves the function of a type of immune cell called Natural Killer cells.

"This is an exciting finding because it could possibly lead to the development of drugs that improve Natural Killer cell function," said TSRI Associate Professor Karsten Sauer, PhD, who led the study. "Natural Killer cells have gained clinical interest as innovative biological therapeutics for certain cancers and also in certain infectious diseases."

The Body's 'SWAT Team'

Natural Killer cells patrol the body and detect characteristic alterations on the surface of cancer cells or virus-infected cells. Through a complicated and little understood signaling machinery -- a domino effect of molecular reactions in a cell that ultimately produces a certain signal -- Natural Killer cells then destroy such "stressed" cells.

Compared to other types of immune cells, Natural Killer cells kill these cells quickly. This makes Natural Killer cells important early responders of the immune system. Not surprisingly, researchers have explored engaging this "SWAT team" of the body therapeutically, particularly in blood cancers.

However, to date, the therapeutic efficacy of Natural Killer cells has been limited. "A key bottleneck is our limited understanding of signaling mechanisms that dampen Natural Killer cell function," Sauer said.

Sauer and colleagues' new research reveals crucial details of this puzzle.

A Way to Prime the Attack

The Sauer group had previously identified ItpkB as a key regulator of immune function. ItpkB acts primarily by producing IP4, a small molecule messenger that controls the functions of various other important signaling molecules. IP4 can improve or inhibit signaling depending on the cell type in which it is produced.

The new research showed that Natural Killer cells from mice lacking ItpkB show elevated signaling and function better than Natural Killer cells that have the enzyme. As a result, mice lacking ItpkB are more effective than mice expressing ItpkB in attacking cells that display characteristic surface changes of cancer cells.

"The enzyme ItpkB has unique features that facilitate its highly specific inhibition by small molecules," said Sauer. "Our findings suggest that such compounds could possibly be used to improve Natural Killer cell function therapeutically. If successful, this could overcome a bottleneck and engage the body's SWAT team to fight cancer."

In addition to Sauer, Eugene Park of Washington University School of Medicine was a co-first author of the study, "Inositol Tetrakisphosphate Limits NK Cell Effector Functions by Controlling Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Signaling." Other authors include Sabine Siegemund, Luise Sternberg and Stephanie Rigaud of TSRI and Anthony R. French, Joseph A. Wahle, A. Helena Jonsson, Wayne M. Yokoyama and co-corresponding author Yina H. Huang of Washington University School of Medicine.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (AI070845, GM088647, AI089805 and AI007606), The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar Award 1440-11 and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft fellowship SI 1547/1-1.

Best Save Some Money With Some DIY Home Improvements.

Given all of the information resources at the homeowner?s fingertips today, choosing the best home improvement advice can be tough. Without the right information, your projects can turn into a disaster. The article below can help you get started with a number of home improvement tasks the right way.

Tie or snip extra cord length on your window blinds. It is easy for a child or pet to get caught and strangled in these cords. Make sure you do leave enough cord to maneuver the blinds, but make sure that the cord that does hang down serves no purpose. You may prevent a tragedy by removing the excess cord.

Install a pergola to give your house some character. This garden fixture will add both romance and tranquility to the aesthetics. A pergola can be installed in as little as one weekend when you enlist the help of your friends.

Many people use CFL bulbs, but few know how to deal with them when they break. Bulbs contain mercury, which is poisonous to living beings. Therefore, when one breaks, you should immediately clear out any person or pet so that the room can air out. Then clean up the glass fragments, using duct tape to carefully pick up the smallest pieces. Dispose of the shattered bulb in a double bag, and thoroughly vacuum the entire area, emptying the canister or bag immediately after.

As you plan on making home improvement projects, try to find out how to do certain things by yourself. The pros charge as much as $50 per hour, so tackling those projects on your own can save tons of money. Plus, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

Improvement Projects

Research ideas for your home improvement projects before you begin. When you stay on the lookout for projects that you think could work in your home, you give yourself many options from which to choose when it comes time to decide on which home improvement projects you want to undertake. Don?t rush into picking color schemes; you don?t want to stress yourself out.

Consider how long you plan on living in the house. If you plan to move in less than five years, it makes no sense to spend a lot of money on huge changes. You should however not overlook maintenance, but any major improvements can be left to a long time owner.

Always carefully review any home improvement contract prior to signing it. As silly as it may seem, you want to make sure everything you are agreeing to is to your approval. If you sign without realizing what the contract contains, you can lose a lot of time and money. Whether you trust him or not, read the details.

Clean with an old toothbrush you no longer use. Whether you?re cleaning the grout in your bath tub area or scrubbing engine parts, you will find that old toothbrushes do an outstanding job. What?s more is that they are free! Why get a new brush when you still have something with a lot of life in it! Save the money for later.

To save money, refinish dreary cabinets in lieu of replacing them. Repaint the cabinet base and replace the doors and fixtures to get an updated new look. It is a more affordable way to improve the look of the kitchen.

In rooms that are most used, installing ceiling fans will help circulate your home?s air. You will not need to turn your air conditioner up as high and you will get warm air moving in the winter. Fans typically can be switched so that they either draw or push air as needed.

Any decent home improvement project will include laying brick and purchasing as many as necessary beforehand would make things flow much quicker. If you should need to repair or add to brickwork, you may have a difficult time trying to match the bricks you already have. Styles of brick change often. If you have extras on hand, you will be well prepared for the future.

Improvement Project

Remember that is easy to make a home improvement project a lot more complicated than it should be. With the tips provided in this article, you will be able to obtain legitimate information about home improvement. By incorporating the tips and techniques found in the above article, you will be well on your way to completing any home improvement project.

13 Patents Designed to Build a Better Mustache - Mental Floss

You may have some buddies participating in Movember, an annual event that raises awareness of (and money for) men?s health issues. Let?s take a look at a few weird ?stache-themed patents.

1. Patent US435748, ?Mustache Guard?

Patented in September 1890 by Ruben P. Hollinshead, this guard is an improvement upon other devices designed to ?[suspend] a gentleman?s mustache in order to keep the same up out of the way at the table, thus preventing the annoyance which so frequently is experienced in eating soups and other like foods, and drinking tea, coffee, or other liquids by gentlemen having heavy moustaches.? It looks rather painful.

2. Patent USD381462, ?Mustache Shield?

Inventor Dennis H. Bailey didn?t do too much explaining in his application for this shield. Still, the patent was granted in 1997.

3. Patent US278999, ?Mustache Holder?

This device, patented by J.A. Moore in 1883, was a comb that held a man?s mustache back so it wouldn?t come into contact with food.

4. Patent US213455, ?Mustache Cup and Glass?

Unlike other mustache cups?which keep the mustache out of whatever a man is trying to drink?this one, patented by Albert Schenck in 1879, will make sure the guard that keeps a man?s ?stache at bay won?t also burn the lips, all thanks to the innovative spout.

5. Patent US398925, ?Mustache Trainer?

The idea behind this interesting looking device, patented by Louis Auguste Allard in 1889, was that, by wearing it, a man could train his ?stache to grow in the desired form. Theoretically, he would have done this while in private. Other attempts at mustache trainers were not much better, either.

6. Patent US123839, ?Mustache Holder?

This patent, filed by Eli J.F. Randolph in 1872, proves this whole mustache guard thing was more than just a passing fad.

7. Patent US135141, ?Mustache Spoon?

If your moustache cup isn?t working, why not try this spoon, patented by Ellen B.A. Mitchellson in 1873? It would allow you to bring soup to your mouth without ?soiling or disfiguring? your moustache.

8. Patent US3858589, ?Sideburn and Moustache Shaper?

In name alone, Sideburn and Moustache Shapers don?t sound weird at all. But these devices, patented in the 1970s by Catherine E. Geiger, are pretty odd?more like things you?d trace than use to tweak your facial hair. Hold them up in front of your face, trim the errant hairs, and voila! Nicely shaped sideburns and ?stache!

9. Patent US 3944112, ?Mustache Cup Adaptor?

Who needs a whole cup when you can just snap an adaptor on whatever thing you?re drinking out of? That?s the idea behind this device, patented by George W. Miller in 1976.

10. Patent US2262992, ?Masquerade?

This patent, granted to Franklyn M. Dessart in 1939, was for a mask that could have different features?like a moustache!?applied to it. Looks like fun, eh?

11. Patent US4206913, ?Trick Windmill Novelty?

Blow into one tube of this device, and the windmill turns. Blow into the other, and you get a graphite powder blown onto your face, ?so as to produce the appearance of a moustache, to the amusement of all others observing the person trying to make the windmill work.? Earl A. Howell, Jr., who was granted the patent in 1980, sure was a jokester!

12. Patent US4710145, ?Therapeutic Doll Figure?

Get ready to have nightmares. This creepy looking doll, which was equipped with a tape recorder to play messages, was meant to be therapeutic. It could even be equipped with a velcro moustache to make it resemble someone. The patent was granted to Nancy Hall Vandis in 1987.

13. Patent USD269461, ?Pacifier?

Every baby needs a mustache pacifier! Or at least Robert L. Qually, who was granted the patent for this device in 1983, thinks so. Timothy E. Brennan, who patented a similar pacifier, probably agrees.
